Jon M. Chu Talks Comparing ‘Wicked’ to ‘Lord of the Rings’

Jon M. Chu had a heavy heart Wicked concludes by remembering his time on set during the filming of the film.

During Variety Awards Circuit PodcastTHE Crazy Rich Asians The director called the entire franchise “one movie.”

“When I thought about each arc, we thought of it as one giant piece,” he said.

His statement appears to have ended the debate that has been discussed for some time now.

Since the release of Lord of the Rings book, fans debated whether these films should be considered three separate films or a single work of cinema.

Peter Jackson himself described the trilogy as a story told across three films, shot simultaneously over a single production period.

Similarly, Chu now finds himself in the same territory, having created an epic two-part musical that he sees as inseparable halves of a whole.

Elsewhere during the interview, Chu reflected on the day the cast and crew said goodbye, saying, “Everyone was very emotional, and I couldn’t feel it yet. It was like, ‘No, I’ll see you next week.’ But I think the office is empty now, which is really sad.”

“When you live with something for more than five years, and you dream about it, and you wake up with nightmares right in front of you, it sticks with you,” he said, half-joking. “I haven’t processed it yet.”

Villain: for good is scheduled to be released on November 21.
