Jimmy Lai, media tycoon and Beijing critic, convicted in controversial security trial

A Hong Kong court has found media mogul and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai guilty of conspiring to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious materials. The 78-year-old tabloid was one of Beijing’s most vocal critics until it was forced to close in 2021. Its trial was criticized for its violation of Hong Kong’s judicial independence and for its crackdown on press freedom. FRANCE 24’s Jan Camenzind Broomby tells us more from Taipei.
