Jayden Lennox leaves BEEDING after taking the ball from Virat Kohli during IND’s 2nd ODI against New Zealand

New Zealand player Jayden Lennox was injured while trying to stop a powerful shot from Virat Kohli during the second ODI match between India and New Zealand. The match began at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday, January 14, with India asked to bat after losing the toss.

New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell won the toss and elected to bowl first. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma scored just 10 runs in the first five overs. The opening pair added a partnership of 70 runs off 74 balls before Rohit was dismissed for 24 off 38 balls. Kohli came in after Rohit’s dismissal.

Kohli played a firm shot to the left and Lennox dove to stop the ball. While sliding into the side field, he injured his left palm and was seen bleeding, forcing him to leave the field for medical treatment. Lennox impressed on his international debut, conceding just 18 runs in five overs.

Who is Jayden Lennox? The New Zealand debutant in Rajkot

Jayden Lennox makes his ODI debut in the match against India. Captain Michael Bracewell brought him into the attack in the 10th over, and Lennox made an immediate impact allowing just two runs, including one wide, in his first over.

He played 54 List A matches, took 69 wickets and scored 224 runs in 28 innings. After his name appeared in the New Zealand XI, the focus quickly shifted off the field as well.

He studied science and technology, environmental science and geography at Massey University. Away from cricket, he worked as a greenkeeper at Palmerston Golf Course in Australia from 2018 to 2019.

He then held positions outside of sport, including positions as a field technician at Aqualinc Research Limited, an assembly technician at Hustler Equipment from 2020 to 2023, and a part-time laboratory technician at ARL between April and September 2024.

Jayden Lennox’s record as a professional cricketer

Jayden Lennox played 21 first-class, 54 List A and 45 T20 matches, taking 48, 69 and 60 wickets respectively. With the bat, he scored 390 runs in first-class cricket, 224 in List A and 68 in T20.

Lennox made his professional debut in November 2019 and has featured in over 50 List A matches, with bowling figures of 4/52. He has also taken on leadership roles, captaining the Central Stags in the Ford Trophy and leading the team in the Super Smash T20 competition.

The 31-year-old earned his place in the senior set-up after producing strong performances for New Zealand A on tours to Bangladesh and South Africa in 2025, which helped open the door to international selection.
