NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction is still a way off, but a lot is happening behind the scenes where franchises are exploring their potential trade options before players go under the hammer. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) keeper-batsman Ishan Kishan is attracting a lot of interest from franchises and five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are learning to lead the race to bring the destructive southpaw home. Reportedly, there was an approach from MI for Kishan but nothing has materialized at this stage. Not just MI, even Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have knocked on SRH’s door for a possible trade/all-cash deal for the left-hander, but there has been no further development on that front. All three parties – MI, KKR and RR – seem to be in the market for a top-notch keeper-batsman given their current team dynamics.South African Ryan Rickelton has done a very good job at the top of the order for MI in IPL 2025, but Kishan gives them more flexibility and allows the management to explore another overseas option in the Playing XI. Additionally, it also allows them to be ready for life after Rohit Sharma. The former India and Michigan skipper is currently 38 years old and clearly doesn’t have many IPL years left in him. MI have always had an eye towards the future and Kishan is someone, they have invested heavily in the past and at present, he fits the bill for the Mumbai based franchise. However, it all depends on how the communication between MI and SRH materializes. From initial discussions, SRH seems reluctant to let go of Kishan, but all that could change if the player decides to leave.

Which IPL franchise do you think Ishan Kishan should join?

Kishan had his best years in the IPL at MI and he couldn’t live up to his billing at SRH after fetching Rs 11.25 crore in the mega-auction. Since then, it’s been a topsy-turvy ride for the disgraced southpaw, but the stars are aligning for him again. Kishan almost returned to the India Test team during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, but could not rejoin the team due to injury. His unavailability forced N Jagadeesan to join the team as a replacement for Rishabh pants. The southpaw had a good start to the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season as he smashed 173 against Tamil Nadu and played a pivotal role in Jharkhand’s innings and 114-run triumph. Even though Kishan was not named in the recent India A squad, he is still on the selectors’ radar and is being followed.
