IPL auction preview: KKR eyes big rebuild with biggest purse | Cricket News

Kolkata Knight Riders, the three-time IPL champions who tasted success as recently as 2024 under captain Shreyas Iyer and mentor Gautam Gambhir, found themselves in a disappointing 2025 campaign. The defending champions finished eighth, a fall few saw coming.KKR didn’t tiptoe into the 2026 IPL cycle. They tore up their old plan and came in with the biggest purse in the room. Andre Russell, a cricketer virtually synonymous with KKR for a decade, was released in a move that stunned the league. Venkatesh Iyer, signed for an incredible Rs 23.75 crore in the mega auction, was also let go. Soon after, Russell announced his retirement from the IPL and joined the franchise as Power Coach. On top of that, KKR offloaded all of their frontline goalkeepers while opting to keep a much smaller core.
They enter the IPL auction with a purse of Rs 64.30 crore, the highest among the ten teams. The irony is that a massive purse at a mini-auction rarely guarantees success. The supply of A-list players is usually limited, and exaggerated competition for a handful of names can distort planning. KKR’s unusually large budget also reflects how badly they misinterpreted the previous mega-auction. Strong mega-auction teams typically go into mini-auctions with a much smaller purse and a well-established field. KKR, on the contrary, arrives with both uncertainty and flexibility. This leaves them in a curious but compelling position. How much of their best eleven is already in place and how much will need to be built from scratch on December 16?
KKR retained a cut core
The Knight Riders are entering the December mini-auction with 12 players retained and 13 slots available.Players selected:Drummers: Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Manish PandeyAll-rounders: Sunil Narine, Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul RoyBowlers: Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, Umran Malik, Vaibhav AroraKKR also has one of the strongest spin partnerships in the league thanks to Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy. This is the only ministry in which they do not need to interfere. All they need are powerful backups. Wanindu Hasaranga or Maheesh Theekshana would be ideal backers behind Narine should they choose to invest.
The biggest question: who will lead them?
Before turning to their opening combination, KKR must resolve the captaincy question. Ajinkya Rahane led them in 2025 and finished as their highest points scorer. If Rahane is given this role again, the logical progression is simple: he must open.Rahane’s 2025 season has been clearly divided into two halves. He scored 390 runs at an average of 35.45 and a strike rate of 147.73, but these figures were heavily fueled by his Powerplay performance. In the first six overs, he was exceptional, scoring 238 runs at a strike rate of 187 and an average of 119. Once the field was extended, his returns fell sharply.Apart from the powerplay, Rahane scored 152 runs off 137 balls in 10 innings with nine dismissals. His average was 16.9, his strike rate 110.9 and his highest score 28. He hit only eight fours and five sixes while recording a run-ball percentage of 33.6. These numbers underline that his game is more effective against the new ball. His recent returns at SMAT reinforce this point: 289 runs in six innings at an average of 57.80 and a strike rate of 158 when opening for Mumbai. If he is captain, he must open. Anything else significantly reduces its impact.
Identify the opening pair
One of the major foundations of KKR’s title run in 2024 was their opening combination. Sunil Narine and Phil Salt have always provided explosive starts. In 2025, the scenario has reversed. De Kock and Gurbaz failed to find rhythm, and Narine had one of his leanest seasons with the bat, failing to cross fifty.Rahane’s repeated early finishes at number three have seen him dominate the powerplay, but that only reinforces the wider point. If KKR intends to maximize Rahane, he should be one of their openers. Narine is not expected to return to the top of the order. His batting renaissance under Gambhir’s mentorship peaked in 2024 and has not resurfaced this year. This chapter should now be closed.
No wicketkeeper
KKR does not have a single domestic wicketkeeper. Their reliance on foreign options has not borne fruit. De Kock scored 152 runs in 8 innings at 21.71 and 129.91, while Gurbaz produced 74 runs in 5 matches at 18.50 and 139.This mini auction doesn’t offer a deep pool of wicketkeepers, but it does offer some intriguing options. Jonny Bairstow is available after replacing Will Jacks at MI. Finn Allen is another explosive pick, capable of serving as an opener. Jamie Smith, England’s young keeper-batsman, offers long-term value.
Foreign Pacers
KKR won the IPL 2024 thanks to a high-pace gamble that paid off spectacularly. Their investment of Rs 24.75 crore in Mitchell Starc resulted in a title win. In 2025, their picks of Nortje and Spencer Johnson did not have the same effect. This year, rhythm once again becomes a top priority.Matheesha Pathirana should be their main target – a death specialist who perfectly fits their requirements. Other options include Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Gerald Coetzee. Among the Indian quicks, Shivam Mavi, Akash Deep and Akash Madhwal offer strong backup profiles. With Russell’s retirement, KKR needs to acquire a powerful all-rounder overseas. Cameron Green appears as the most natural solution and the most sought-after player in this auction. KKR certainly has the financial clout to make this run. Liam Livingstone is another option, offering mid-order strikes and useful spin. Green’s flexibility – he can open or hit from three – makes him particularly valuable in KKR’s evolving structure.Backed by the largest exchange, KKR enters the auction with a reduced core and a long list of decisions that will define its next cycle. They dismantled half of their workforce while preserving the elements that still give them their identity. Their ability to recreate the clarity and steel of their 2024 campaign will depend entirely on how they read the room on December 16. If they get their captaincy call-up, address the top order, fill the wicket void and secure the away match-winners they are targeting, KKR could quickly move from uncertainty to a genuine resurgence. Materials for straightening are available. Now it’s a matter of putting them together with precision.
