Max Greyserman claims exclusive leadership in Japan

Max Greyserman carded an 8-under 63 in the second round Friday to secure a four-shot lead at the Baycurrent Classic in Yokohama, Japan.
He sprinkled six birdies around an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole to sit at 12-under 130 at Yokohama Country Club. He was in a three-way tie for first place after the first round.
“I’ve done things well this week from the start so I just have to keep doing what I’m doing,” said Greyserman, who is seeking his first career PGA Tour victory.
Greyserman came close on that front at this same tournament last year before losing a shot. He has four second places since 2024.
“The job’s not done until it’s done. So put your foot on the gas, keep trying to make as many birdies as you can,” Greyserman said. “I’m going to go in with the mentality of trying to shoot the lowest score possible.”
Four shots away are Xander Schauffele (63 Friday), Alex Smalley (65) and Swede Alex Noren (65).
Schauffele bounced back from shooting a 71 on a windy Thursday to post his lowest round of the PGA Tour season. He completed his bogey-free round with eight birdies, including four in a row on holes 3 to 6.
“It was good to get a good start (Friday), I was pretty happy with yesterday, I was just trying to survive. It’s crazy to play this course two completely different ways,” Schauffele said.
Schauffele is aiming for his first victory since the 2024 Open Championship.
When asked what he hoped to gain from his fast start, Schauffele answered with the obvious.
“Trust is kind of the most important thing,” he said. “Every Tour professional knows that there are times when you’re playing well and things are going well and you don’t really think much about your swing or technical things. I’m just trying to get back to that a little bit more for the rest of this year and the new year.”
Colombian Nico Echavaria, the defending champion, shot a 65 on Friday to find himself in a four-way tie for fifth place with South Korean Si Woo Kim (64), Sahith Theegala (67) and Brian Campbell (68).
Japanese Kazuki Higa (64) started his round in style, making eight birdies on his first nine holes to reach 28th place. A bogey at No. 12 halted his momentum and he is tied for ninth place at 6 under.
Keith Mitchell made bogey on his first hole, then made eight birdies and an eagle to shoot a tournament-best score of 62.9 under. He is tied for 12th at 5 under.
