How a new refrigerator with a built-in barcode reader could change shopping forever

Keeping a mental list of groceries you’re running low on is a weekly battle. GE Profile’s new smart refrigerator, announced before CES 2026aims to take the guesswork out of your next trip to the supermarket.
The brand has introduced an AI-powered refrigerator that could turn the kitchen’s all-important cold storage space into a smart assistant, featuring a built-in scanner to manage your grocery list, a smart hub to suggest recipes, and a live camera feed designed to eliminate excessive purchases and reduce food waste.

You can access your grocery list through the app or have it sent directly to an Instacart account.
At the heart of the GE Profile 4 French Door Smart Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant (27.9 cu. ft.) is a barcode reader built into the exterior of the refrigerator’s water and ice dispenser. When you run out of milk, eggs or any other item, simply scan the barcode and the fridge automatically adds it to a digital grocery list in the SmartHQ app, complete with brand, flavor and size.

Currently, the system recognizes more than four million products and the shopping list can be shared with household members, referenced during store visits or synced directly to Instacart for delivery. For items without barcodes, users can add them via voice commands or text entry on the refrigerator screen or through the app.
“We create intuitive experiences that feel natural and effortless, transforming the refrigerator into a true kitchen companion that evolves with families over time,” said Jason May, executive director of French door refrigeration products at GE Appliances.
A camera allows you to check rations
The refrigerator is also equipped with FridgeFocus, a camera system integrated into an LED bar that captures real-time images of the drawers. Household members can check what’s in the fridge while shopping, helping to avoid duplicate purchases.

More than a cold room, the refrigerator is a centerpiece of the house
The refrigerator functions as a household hub, providing weather updates and recipe suggestions.
The 8-inch touchscreen serves as a command center for the kitchen, offering weather updates, customizable backgrounds, and access to recipes from partners like Taste of Home. New recipes are added every month through regular software updates.
Voice commands enable hands-free operation, allowing you to add items to a list, convert measurements, or search for product information. The dispenser features sensor technology for hands-free water filling, offering options for automatic filling or precise measuring.
