GM ends development of hydrogen fuel cells

In a Friday bulletin, GM announcement that it will end the work of its HYDROTEC brand on the development of hydrogen fuel cells. GM will instead focus its R&D efforts on batteries, charging technologies and electric vehicles. The company announced it will continue its Fuel Cell System Manufacturing joint venture with Honda, which creates cells for data centers and energy production.
GM’s post says that due to limited infrastructure and high costs, hydrogen fuel cells simply haven’t taken off for mainstream vehicles. Lately, the auto industry seems to agree. GM’s change follows a similar decision in February by Toyota, which did not completely give up the ghost but rather rotated its hydrogen fuel cell projects will focus on industrial rather than consumer applications.
