GM Brings Back Chevrolet Bolt EV for 2027 After Battery Fire Recalls

General Motors is bringing back an affordable and popular electric vehicle model after years of absence from the market.

The Chevrolet Bolt returns for the 2027 model year, starting at $29,900 at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, according to a company press release.

“Later in the model year, an even more affordable LT will be available with a starting MSRP1 of $28,995,” the press release states. Both electric vehicles under $30,000 will include a destination and freight charge of $1,395.

GM says the car “will begin shipping to customers early next year and will be a limited-run model.” The electric vehicle will be offered with Tesla’s North American charging standard and is expected to have a range of 255 miles, the company said.

GM first launched the Chevrolet Bolt EVs in 2015 and used batteries made by LG entities as part of a commercial agreement with the automaker. GM issued recalls in 2020 after facing numerous complaints about fires in certain vehicles.

GM ended production of the Bolt EV in 2023, and in May 2024, GM and South Korean company LG Energy Solution reached an agreement to establish a $150 million fund to help Chevrolet Bolt EV owners affected by faulty batteries, according to U.S. court filings obtained by Reuters.

The Bolt’s relaunch comes at a time when tariff-induced higher prices and fewer federal subsidies tied to electric vehicles are putting pressure on consumers.

“The Chevrolet Bolt was the first affordable, mass-market long-range electric vehicle and built one of GM’s most loyal customer bases thanks to its price, versatility and practicality,” Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet, said in a statement.
