During one of South Africa’s training sessions, Kagiso Rabada injured his ribs and underwent several checks and medical assessments before the match, before finally being ruled out of the Eden Gardens test.
The Proteas, however, didn’t miss it much as they registered a stunning 30-run win over India after the home side’s bowling strategy backfired.
Kagiso Rabada remains doubtful for the second Test, which begins on November 22 in Guwahati. In case he is excluded again, the CSA has already prepared a backup plan.
They added Lungi Ngidi to the Test squad for the second match to cover for Kagiso Rabada, and he has already joined the team in Kolkata.
Proteas face many injury problems
Kagiso Rabada is not the only player in the visitors’ camp to face fitness issues. During the first Test, veteran spinner Simon Harmer suffered a shoulder injury.
Not only him, left-arm pacer Marco Jansen is also carrying an issue for which he visited the hospital along with Simon Harmer, and clarity is awaited on their participation in the upcoming Test match.
Speaking after the win against India, Simon Harmer had said that they celebrated the victory in their team hotel, drinking a few beers.
“We’re in a nice hotel. Probably a bit of golf tomorrow. We had a few beers last night. I think it’s important to celebrate wins, especially here in India, because you don’t know when they’ll come back. The senior group here enjoy winning Test match cricket. It’s a quick turnaround, so nice to have a few extra days off,” he said on ‘talkSPORTCricket
“We need to make sure we go back to the drawing board because the Indians are going to have fire in their bellies and want to overturn the results of the first Test.”
I think India have never played Test cricket in Guwahati – Simon Harmer
Harmer further said that just like India, they don’t know what the conditions will be in the second Test match in Guwahati.
“I think India have never played Test cricket in Guwahati, so I’m sure they don’t know exactly how it’s going to go.
“I think they’re going to think that having the best Test bowler in the world and him not making an impact on day three, they would want to get him into the game more, so is that going to be seamer-friendly? You don’t know what you’re going to get. They obviously want to win so they’re going to make sure the wicket suits the team they want to pick,” he said.
