Fantasy Premier League transfers to avoid

As Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 8 approaches, knowing who to release is just as important as which players to sign, writes FPL expert Blake Hurst.

Some players struggle to find their form, face difficult matches or carry doubts that could cost you points.

Here are five names to seriously consider selling or avoiding – make the right decisions now and avoid unnecessary headaches in the weeks to come!

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa, 8.7m)

An impact injury during the international break has left Watkins sidelined from training and while there is a chance he returns for Gameweek 8, this seems like the ideal time to bring him forward.

Villa’s upcoming matches don’t offer much encouragement either, with tougher opponents likely to limit Watkins’ production even if he is fit.

Given the striker’s price and the number of in-form futures contracts emerging, this appears to be a convenient window to cash out and redistribute funds elsewhere.

Short-term pain could easily turn into long-term gain by walking away now.

Eberechi Eze (Arsenal, 7.6m)

Even though he is exciting to watch, Eze just isn’t the right FPL choice at the moment.

Priced at 7.6 million, the new signing needs consistent returns to justify this spot, but with Arsenal spreading their attacking power across multiple players, his reliability looks doubtful.

Although Eze is brimming with talent and commitment, the final FPL product has yet to live up to its promise. With better-priced midfielders offering stronger value and more predictable scoring elsewhere, Eze sits firmly in the ‘avoid’ category at the moment.

Eze is a fantastic player – but in FPL terms, he’s not yet the smartest investment.

Giorgi Mamardashvili (Liverpool, 4.3m)

The excitement around Mamardashvili is understandable – a Liverpool goalkeeper priced at just 4.3 million looks like a bargain.

But on closer inspection, it’s not as attractive as it seems. Alisson Becker is set to regain his starting spot once he returns from injury, meaning Mamardashvili will quickly become a dead spot on your team – a transfer waiting to happen.

Add to that Liverpool’s upcoming difficult matches in which clean sheets are not guaranteed, and it’s clear that this is not the best decision.

Better to avoid bringing in Mamardashvili and instead focus on safer goalkeeping options.

Marc Guéhi (Crystal Palace, 4.9 m)

This currently applies to all Crystal Palace defenders: if you have one in your team, it’s probably time to consider moving him away.

The upcoming fixtures simply aren’t strong enough to justify keeping your funds tied up in Palace’s defence.

Moving to a more reliable option, such as one of Arsenal’s defenders, provides better stability and clean sheet potential over the next few match weeks and appears to be a smart and practical move to free up both budget and squad space.

Mark Koll (Chelty, 6.1m)

Controversial but clear: although I would like it for GW8, Cucurella should be avoided on your Wildcard. At 6.1 million, the full-back is simply not worth that price considering the options available.

If you want a Chelsea defender, Trevoh Chalobah, at 5.1m, offers much better value without sacrificing too much in potential returns.

Chelsea’s matches look promising, but investing big in a defender only makes sense if you are confident in the points week after week.

For this reason, Cucurella seems overpriced and risky right now, making Chalobah the wisest choice for budget-conscious Wildcarders who want to invest their funds elsewhere.
