Experts warn of new virus ‘quite contagious’ during holiday season

A new virus sweeping the planet cannot be treated with traditional methods of soap, water and disinfectants, a health expert has warned.
Adenovirus has been called worse than coronavirus or the flu, with similar symptoms including shortness of breath, runny nose and sore throat.
However, one striking difference is the lack of available treatments. Therefore, if you become infected, you may just have to rely on your body’s immunity.
Fortunately, in most cases, adenovirus is relatively benign. However, as with Covid or the flu, if you are immunocompromised, symptoms could become more serious. Mirror reports.
Jefferson Health Infection Prevention and Control Medical Director Eric Sachinwalla cautioned that unlike the diseases we are more familiar with, there is less that can be done to actually treat adenovirus.
Sachinwalla said PhillyMad: “It’s quite contagious because it’s more corrosive than other viruses – soap and water, or daily disinfectant, won’t kill it, so it tends to live longer in the environment.”
Adenovirus can present with several symptoms, including shortness of breath, runny nose, and sore throat.
Other symptoms may include diarrhea or conjunctivitis, but these are very varied as there are over 60 strains.
Essentially, Sachinwalla assured that you can manage adenovirus with rest.
However, people who may be more vulnerable, such as the elderly, pregnant or immunocompromised, may want to monitor their symptoms more closely.
