England midfielder should join Marseille

Angel Gomes is expected to join Marseille after leaving his French compatriot Lille.

The former young man from Manchester United, who won four caps for England, had been linked to West Ham and Tottenham, but opted for Marseille, where he will be binding with another former united player at Mason Greenwood.

The 24-year-old could also be joined by CJ Egan-Riley in Burnley at Stade Vélodrome after the Clarets confirmed that the defender rejected the offer of a new agreement to Turf Moor.

A declaration from Marseille read: “Olympique de Marseille announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with Angel Gomes concerning the arrival of the English international midfielder at the club.”

Egan-Riley impressed while Burnley obtained promotion in the Premier League last season, but was also out of contract this summer.

The Lancashire team wanted the 22 -year -old to remain, but agreed that he wanted to move on.

They confirmed the departure of the central defender in a press release which referred to him to join an unnamed Ligue 1 club. It has been widely asserted that it was Marseille.

The press release added: “Burnley Football Club can confirm that it was informed by CJ Egan-Riley representatives that the International Defender of England U-21 has now officially rejected the club of an important long-term contract with the club.

“Despite the club’s commitment to ensure the long -term future of CJ and the substantial investment offered, CJ has made the decision to continue an opportunity in France.”
