Diane Ladd’s cause of death revealed weeks after she passed away at age 89

New details have emerged regarding Diane Ladddeath at age 89.

The Oscar-nominated actress’ cause of death was ruled acute due to chronic hypoxic respiratory failure, according to a death certificate obtained by People Monday, November 17. The conditions leading to Ladd’s death included interstitial lung disease, which had been occurring for years, as well as esophageal dysmotility, which was listed as another contributing condition.

Ladd was cremated on November 10, the outlet reported.

News of Ladd’s death was announced on November 3, when his daughter, actress Laura Dernpaid tribute to his mother via a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

“My incredible hero and profoundly gifted mother, Diane Ladd, passed away with me by her side this morning, at her home in Ojai, California,” Dern, 58, wrote at the time. “She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have created. We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Following his death, Laura’s father and Ladd’s ex-husband, Bruce Dernhonored the actress.

“Diane was a wonderful actress and I feel like she was a bit of a ‘hidden treasure’ until she met David Lynch,” Bruce, 89, said in a statement to Us every week on November 3. “When he cast her as Laura’s mother in Wild at Heart, it was as if the world then truly understood her genius. She was invaluable as a SAG board member for decades, providing the perspective of a true actress.”

“She lived a great life,” Bruce continued. “She saw everything for what it was. She was a great teammate to her fellow actors. She was funny, smart, kind. But most importantly to me, she was a wonderful mother to our incredible prodigy daughter. And for that, I am forever grateful.”

Alongside Laura, the exes also shared daughter Diane, who died at 18 months after a drowning in 1962. After their split in 1969, Ladd remarried. William A. Shea Jr.. from 1969 to 1977 before marrying Robert Charles Hunter in 1999. The couple was married for more than two decades until his death earlier this year.

Hunter, who was the former CEO of PepsiCo Food Systems, died in Fort Worth, Texas, while visiting his children, his family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in August. He was 77 years old at the time of his death.

Years before Ladd’s death, Laura revealed her mother was given six months to live following a lung health problem in 2019.

“She was exposed to pesticide sprays in the neighborhood and was not warned and realized she had scarring on her lungs,” Laura explained during an appearance on Today in April 2023. “And they said, ‘If you can get her to walk, increase her lung capacity, maybe that will help.’ »

In an effort to help him recover, Ladd and Laura would walk around and record conversations for the Big little lies the star’s children will hear it one day.

“It was early in 2019 that we started these marches, and they said, ‘Your mother will never be here in six months,’” Laura continued. “But by dint of walking and not believing in it, as my mother told [Hoda Kotb]‘They say they practice medicine, so I’m not going to believe one doctor, I’m going to see many and I’m going to continue to fight with alternative modalities and my daughter and I love each other.’
