Danny Boyle recently explained why he will not make an Oscar Slumdog millionaire film in the current situation.
In a new interview with The guardianThe experienced director opened on his 2008 film, which tells the story of a ghetto kid from Mumbai (Dev Patel) who wins a quiz jackpot.
“We would not be able to do this now,” said the 28 years later director.
He continued: “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to think about all of this. We have to look at the cultural luggage we carry and the brand we have left on the world. ”
Asked about production as a form of colonialism, Danny replied: “Well, only in the sense that everything is. At the time, it seemed radical. We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai. ”
“We were working with a large Indian crew and trying to make a film in culture. But you are still a stranger. It’s always a defective method,” said the filmmaker.
Interestingly, Danny noted: “This type of cultural appropriation could be sanctioned at certain times.”
“But at other times, it cannot be. I mean, I am proud of the film, but you would not even plan to do something like that today,” said the 127 Film director.
Danny also said: “He would not even be funded. Even if I was involved, I would look for a young Indian filmmaker to turn him.”
Meanwhile, Danny’s comments indicate that he is not interested in making a continuation of Slumdog movie.
