Leeds said ‘dangerous’ striker could be open to January move with 49ers keen on deal
English Football League expert Don Goodman has shared his stance on the rumors linking Haji Wright with Leeds United.
Coventry City have had a blistering start to the season, losing just one of their opening 14 Championship games. Under the management of Frank Lampard, Coventry are a well-drilled and intense team, who have already scored 39 goals in the second division.
Wright, a striker who also plays for the US national team, has played a vital role in Coventry’s success. The striker has scored nine goals in all competitions, including eight in 13 league matches. Unsurprisingly, rumors about Wright’s future began to circulate.
Premier League side Leeds United have been linked with a move for Wright, with Football Insider noting that the Whites would be “eager” to complete a deal for the 27-year-old.
Goodman offers his thoughts on Leeds’ interest in Wright
Speaking to Football League World, Goodman played down suggestions Wright would turn down advances from a Premier League side.
“It’s an interesting decision for Haji Wright to make. I’m not sure you can snub a Premier League club in November when the transfer window is still a long way away, and we obviously need to establish whether this is just speculation or not.
“Look, they’re two phenomenal clubs, but I’m not sure there are many Championship players who would turn down the opportunity to join a Premier League club.”
Leeds have picked up 11 points from their first 10 matches in what is their first Premier League season since 2023. The Whites have generally looked like a solid, structured team defensively, although there are some question marks over their attack. Only Nottingham Forest and Wolves, who occupy two places in the bottom three of the table, have scored fewer league goals (seven) than Los Blancos (nine).
Noah Okafor has had a promising start at Elland Road, while the physicality of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha allows the Whites to play football incorporating long balls forward. It could be argued, however, that none of their offensive options are as reliable scorers as Wright currently is.
Given Coventry’s ongoing promotion efforts, it remains to be seen whether Wright, who has been branded a “dangerous” player by boss Frank Lampard, will leave the Sky Blues mid-season. However, as Goodman said, the lure of England’s elite may prove too alluring to ignore.
