Police arrest 147 people in major Selangor gaming syndicate arrest case

Kuala Lumpur police have arrested 147 suspects in an operation to bust a gaming syndicate in Selangor.

Searches carried out across the region resulted in the capture of the suspected perpetrators of the betting ring as well as a host of paraphernalia associated with the conduct of an illegal operation.

Among those arrested were seven non-Malaysian nationals aged between twenty and fifty years old. The New Straits Times reported that they had violated their visa and employment rights.

Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kamar said: “Investigations revealed that all the premises raided did not have any valid authorization from any authority, including the Ministry of Finance, to carry out gambling-related activities, such as supplying slot machines, spare parts, developing online gaming platforms or promoting gambling. »

Of those arrested, one hundred and thirty-three will be charged with violating the country’s gambling laws. Under Section 4(1)(g) of the Act, Section 120B of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy, the individuals will be charged with promoting gambling.

They could also face further charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act, 2001 (AMLATFPUAA) for their actions.

The seven persons violating passport regulations will be charged under Section 39B of the Malaysian Immigration Act 1959/63.

Malaysian authorities are strict on illegal gambling

Malaysia has been quick to stamp out all traces of illegal gambling, including the use of social media influencers to promote any platform that violates the country’s laws.

As we reported, twenty-seven people were arrested in seven states across the country, in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Johor, Perlis, Kedah and Penang.

Mr Mohd Shuhauly, from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal Malaysian Police, said: “Initial investigations revealed that the gambling syndicates hired the suspects based on the number of their social media followers. »
