Curt Cignetti torn by fans as Indiana HC makes his feelings on NFL coaching clear

Curt Cignetti has Indiana one win away from a national championship. The Hoosiers will face Miami on Monday night in a game that no one saw coming two years ago. His success has put him on the radar for several openings in the NFL, with analysts connecting him to several vacancies in recent weeks.

Cignetti addressed these rumors Saturday during media day in Miami. He declared himself “not an NFL guy” and said that choice happened in 2000.

Fans jumped on him once the comments were made public on X.

“Dude is a huge asshole,” one fan said.

“Yeah, because he can’t get away with blatant cheating in the NFL,” another fan posted, referencing the rumor that spread online claiming Indiana was hacking practice film software during its playoff run.

“He realized a long time ago that it was harder to cheat in the NFL,” one fan wrote.

Here are some other reactions from fans.

“He makes several million dollars a year more than the average NFL coach. Not counting his buyout,” one fan said.

“Well, it’s not really college these days,” another fan said.

“He realizes the mind control bullshit won’t work,” one fan commented.

Curt Cignetti remembers turning down Green Bay when the Packers tried to hire him as an assistant. He chose NC State with Chuck Amato instead.

His current contract pays him more than $11 million per year through 2033. He signed this extension in October.

People didn’t say Curt Cignetti’s name for no reason. Rich Eisen brought him up for the Las Vegas job on his Jan. 5 show. Peter Schrager echoed this idea during an appearance on ESPN.

Las Vegas holds the top pick in April’s draft. Everyone expects them to take Fernando Mendoza, Indiana’s Heisman-winning quarterback. Pete Carroll was fired, leaving that spot open. The Cignetti-Mendoza package looked attractive on paper.

Marcus Spears mentioned Cignetti for Pittsburgh on Jan. 13 during “NFL Live.” Mike Tomlin walked away from the Steelers, creating this vacancy. Cignetti grew up in Pittsburgh, where his father Frank coached at Pitt years ago.
