Every once in a while, I find myself scrolling through hundreds of film and TV projects on streaming services in the hopes of stumbling upon something truly special. 9 times out of 10, I end up spelunking and return to an old episode of It’s always sunny in Philadelphia Or Seinfeldalthough sometimes I discover something spectacular that I can’t believe I haven’t already heard of before. One such case of the latter was my recent discovery of the 2021 film Royal skittles is Tubi.
The film features a hilarious plot based on a wacky true story, an all-star comedy cast, and tons of heart.
For those who, like me, completely missed the release of Royal skittlesThe film focuses on two suburban housewives named Connie Kaminski and Joanna Johnson as they build an empire of counterfeit grocery coupons.
Although the premise seems a bit far-fetched, these coupons end up accounting for tens of millions in lost revenue at many grocery chains, eventually attracting the interest of Ken Miller, an overzealous loss prevention officer, who teams up with U.S. Postal Inspector Simon Kilmurry.
Savvy shoppers continue to recruit local moms into their brilliant money-saving scheme over time and incriminate themselves by purchasing flashy vehicles and lavish luxury goods. While this happens, the dynamic duo of Miller and Kilmurry investigate the coupon scam, while bonding over a shared love of absurd inflexibility.
As the credits roll Royal skittlescoupon theft reaches truly insane levels, as the entire empire collapses like a drug cartel in a crime thriller.
Royal skittles is hilarious and plays out a bit like a serious crime drama, with Kaminski and Johnson replacing a pair of crime lords à la Tony Montana or Pablo Escobar. The film was written and directed by husband-and-wife duo Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, based loosely on the true story of suburban moms in the Phoenix, Arizona area who made a similar coupon bet in 2012.
Royal skittles boasts a massive ensemble of comedy legends in its cast, including Kristen Bell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Paul Walter Hauser, Vince Vaughn, Jack McBrayer, Stephen Root, Marc Evan Jackson and CommunityThis is Joel McHale, just to name a few.
I was shocked to discover this movie while randomly scrolling, because a movie with this cast and an over-the-top premise seems like exactly what would be on my radar. However, after doing a little digging, I understood exactly why I had never heard of it. Royal skittles previously, as the film’s 2021 release was buried by the news of COVID-19.
Rather than being released in theaters, Royal skittles was initially released to the public via an exclusive streaming deal with Showtime and Paramount+, and failed to garner attention amid the ongoing global outbreak.
COVID also probably explains why Royal skittles has received such milquetoast reviews, although they are absolutely hilarious, IMHO. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes collectively gave the film a score of just 48 percent, despite the fact that general audiences love the comedy vehicle, to the tune of a Popcornmeter score of 82 percent.
