In Venezuela, regional parliamentary elections take place today. The country remains one of the poorest in Latin America, and the regime of President Nicolás Maduro is accused of generalized human rights violations – including the torture, disappearance and imprisonment of political opponents. Many opposition leaders hide, following presidential elections which were largely condemned by the international community as fraudulent.
