The triple winner of the Cy Young Prize, Max Scherzer, aims to take another step before Monday evening and to help the Toronto Blue Jays host to win on New York Yankees.
Scherzer (0-0, 5.63 ERA) should start opening a series of four games for the Blue Jays in third place, who are three games behind the Yankees in the American League East.
The 40 -year -old right -hander – an All -Star eight times – will make his third start of the season and his second since his return of a fiery thumb that put him on the injured list.
After having lasted only three rounds during a departure on March 29, Scherzer returned Wednesday to launch five rounds against the Guardians of Cleveland, granting three points, six strokes and three goals on balls with four stick withdraws in a decision without decision.
“A little rusty,” said Scherzer. “I could do better. I launched well; I didn’t launch well.”
Toronto manager John Schneider said: “There were so many positive points to withdraw. I think that in the future for us, it’s really a very good sign.”
Scherzer has a 4-5 file with an MPM of 4.25 in 12 career starts against the Yankees.
He should oppose Carlos Rodon (9-5, 2.92). In seven career beginnings against Toronto, the 32-year-old left-hander has a 2-2 sheet with a 5.02 MPM. Rodon has just released an unexpected departure of six rounds in a decision without a decision against the host Cincinnati Reds.
The Blue Jays finished a 4-2 road trip with a 5-3 series victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
The Yankees won the rubber match of their three-game home series against athletics 12-5 on Sunday.
Toronto could use Scherzer sleeves. The LEVEUR enclosure worked hard in the last two games after Chris Bassitt made two rounds and more of his departure on Saturday and Eric LAUER knew 4 1/3 innings when he left Sunday.
None of the two teams is particularly hot. The Blue Jays have been 7-8 since June 13 and the Yankees are 6-10 on the same range.
“It’s still in June in July, but it’s a big series,” said Schneider. “You get four against the team that leads the division … and it’s nice to have Max Scherzer on the mound.”
Scherzer will have to worry about the Aaron judge, who struck a pair of two -point circuits for the Yankees on Sunday, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who also had four points produced with a triple and a three -point circuit.
“We know that we are not playing our best and we are still there at the top of the division and that gives us a huge advantage in our eyes,” said Chisholm. “We can imagine when we return to a roll as at the start of the season.”
The judge has a career circuit against Scherzer. Giancarlo Stanton, who did not play on Sunday, has four circuits against him.
The Yankees hope that Sunday score frenzy is a sign that their strike is coming back after a drought.
“In baseball, you will have small heights and valleys,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “The last two weeks have been a little difficult for us. We had a few sections there when I felt as if we were close to that.”
An exception has been chisholm. In 21 games since June 5, he beat .321 (25 for 78) with four doubles, one triple, five circuits, 12 points and 17 points produced.
Chisholm was also impressive defensively to the third goal, which he showed on Sunday.
“His game is so electric,” said Boone. “He can change the game and affect the game in so much different ways.”
