Minnesota Man accused of having shot legislators to face federal accusations

The suspect accused of having fatally killed minnesota legislator and her husband in an unleashing of firearms in June was charged with six federal accusations, the State Prosecutor General said.

The accusations against Vance Boelter, 57, include harassment and murder which, according to prosecutors, could comply with a maximum prison sentence or the death penalty.

After a two -day man hunt, Mr. Boelter was arrested on June 16 for his alleged role in the killings of the Minnesota legislative, Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark Hortman.

Mr. Boelter remains in detention in Minnesota, where he also faces state accusations. He has not yet pleaded.

According to the prosecutors, Mr. Boelter has tracked up and shot in two other state legislators – John Hoffman, a senator from the Minnesota state, and his wife, Yvette Hoffman – in a separate shooting. Prosecutors said he also had plans for a larger scale attack than the police had thwarted.

“Vance Boelter planned and carried out a night of terror that rocked Minnesota to his heart,” said American lawyer Joseph H Thompson in a written declaration.

“He made targeted political assassinations that have never been seen in Minnesota,” he said.

The prosecutors also published a letter in which they say that Mr. Boelter admitted to being the shooter and said that the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, had asked him to kill American senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith for political purposes. Prosecutors and Walz say that this statement is completely false.

According to court documents, Mr. Boelter did research on the victims and their families in advance, in preparation for the attacks of June 14.

Mr. Boelter approached Hoffman’s home in Champlin, Minnesota, disguised as a police officer and when they responded to the door, pulled eight times to Senator Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman, prosecutors said. He then tried to shoot their daughter, Hope Hoffman.

Mr. Boelter then went to the houses of two other elected officials from Minnesota, who were both absent at the time, before going to the Hortmans House and deadly shoot the couple, prosecutors said.

He was arrested two days later near his family home in a rural wooded area west of Minneapolis.
