Condé Nast torn by union after layoffs at far-left Teen Vogue

The New York NewsGuild is furious that Teen Vogue is laying off Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and transgender staff.

Parent company Condé Nast announced Monday that Teen Vogue would move from a separate publication to part of Vogue.com, billing it as “part of a broader initiative to expand the Vogue ecosystem.” The downsizing that accompanied the change angered the Guild, which noted that the left-leaning outlet was laying off minorities.

“The NewsGuild of New York and Condé United strongly condemn Condé Nast’s consolidation plans for Teen Vogue, a move that is clearly intended to blunt the award-winning magazine’s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed most,” the Guild wrote.

“Management plans to lay off six of our members, most of whom are women or trans BIPOC, including the political editor of Teen Vogue, continuing the trend of layoffs at Condé, disproportionately affecting marginalized employees,” the Guild continued. “Condé management said that as a ‘dedicated pillar’ of Vogue, Teen Vogue ‘will focus its content on career development, cultural leadership and other issues that matter most to young people, according to the publication.'”

The union noted that Teen Vogue now has “no writers or editors explicitly covering politics” and that the publication’s accolades were not mentioned in its announcement.

“Gone are the political-cultural critiques of the fashion and culture industries by the black women writers being laid off today. Gone are the incisive and artful depictions of young people by the Asian and Latina women photographers being laid off today. Gone, from the lauded politics section, is the work that made possible Vivian Wilson’s blockbuster cover, one of Condé Nast’s best-performing stories of the year, coordinated by the only trans employee dismissed today,” the Guild said.

“Nearly all of these staff members identify as LGBTQ. Currently, there is only one woman of color remaining on the Teen Vogue editorial team,” the Guild continued. “Condé executives owe answers to us and to Teen Vogue’s readership. We will get those answers.”

Condé Nast did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An affected staff member who uses “they/them” pronouns, Lex McMenamin, took to the liberal social media platform Bluesky to announce the news.

“I was fired from Teen Vogue today along with several other staff members, and today is my last day. Certainly, there will be more from me when the dust settles, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no more political staff at Teen Vogue,” McMenamin wrote.
