Clown in a cornfield is such a succinct but evocative title for a horror film. Your villain and frame are there, as well as all the horrible connotations that your imagination can face the two. Eli Craig’s new slasher has a lot to live with a title like that, but the director of Tucker & Dale vs Evil knows what he is doing.
He has all the ingredients: attractive characters, a small town with a huge secret, a macabre killer and an underlying message that ensures that the film is more than more than just A killer clown splashing the victims around a cornfield – although it is insured, there are still many.
After a preface in 1991 which immediately delivers – the children celebrating in a cornfield were caught in ambush by a maniac with very large Shoes – We cut today and have a closer look at Kettle Springs, Missouri, an agricultural city that has fallen in difficult times since the closure of the Baypen Brand corn syrup plant. The company’s mascot, a smiling clown named “Frendo”, is still looming on the city as a more prosperous recall. More recently, local teenagers who are desperately bored have thrown him as a masked killer in horror shorts they put on YouTube.
The sleeping rural community quickly adds two new residents: Quinn (Ginny and Georgia‘S Katie Douglas) and his father (Aaron Abrams). He accepted the work of the city doctor, thinking that after the sudden loss of Quinn’s mother, the pair could use a new start. Although she quickly became friends with the YouTube clique, Quinn is not delighted to move to Nowheresville, especially since she takes up how old residents are hostile to local adolescents.
But there is not much time to marinate about it as things happen; Clown in a cornfield Takes up over a few days and nights only, and a good amount of screen time is devoted to red nose, red laying, bronzer the chainsaws, crossbows, cattle products and other conveniently available destruction tools.
Despite this title, and despite Craig who is the guy behind the coat of coarse Tucker & Dale vs Evil,, Clown in a cornfield is actually less a comedy than you think. There are spiritual and self -referent lines – the script is from Craig and Carter Blanchard, adapted from the novel by Adam Cesare – but Frendo is not to be fucked, as a character warns Quinn. Whoever is under the mask is ruthless and furious, and Clown in a cornfield engages in a poor orientation on the identification of the killer while more and more bodies accumulate.
Throughout the film, Clown in a cornfield draws the wires from this generation conflict and even brings technology as part of it. Quinn’s new friends love to make videos and be online, but they are surrounded by adults who do not see the interest of the most basic progress. (One of the funniest scenes, teasing in the film’s trailer, is a crisis that occurs when the only way to call for help involves a rotary phone.)
The motivation behind Frendo’s slaughter is linked to this fracture, and if the pieces do not integrate quite at the end, Clown in a cornfield has then built a lot of energetic good will. He turns out to be a Above all Simple slasher film – with many expected tropes, including a pleasantly horrible gore – with smart and subversive blows along the way.
