Let’s start with how Claressa Shields took her response to a whole new level of pettiness. She copied Laila’s video style to a T, clapping back with her own 20-minute video. And make no mistake: Laila wasn’t the only one with receipts, Claressa also arrived locked and loaded with hers.
She kicked things off by accusing Laila of tearing down other female athletes. Claressa even dropped a clip from Laila’s old “Breakfast Club” interview, where Laila talked about one of Ronda Rousey’s fights. Claressa said the comments were demeaning and discrediting. From there, she accused Laila of hating any woman in combat sports who shines brighter than her. “Now it’s the thing that people want to overlook. It’s supposed to be so elegant and above everything else,” » Shields said.
Shields angers Ali for turning his back on the black community
Shields didn’t stop there, she continued, saying that Laila never stood on the same front for “Black lives matter.” Claressa even shared photos of herself at protests in support of black men continually being murdered by police. The boxing champion also posted a video of Laila speaking about her intentions to support the black community. In this interview, Laila said that she has fans of all races and she never wants anyone to feel excluded. She added that she likes the idea of “All lives matter” because it includes everyone. But for Shields, this comment had a different impact since Muhammad Ali was known for challenging racial injustices.
“It doesn’t seem to me that you are proud of who you are or of being the daughter of the great Mohammed Ali.”
Shields also criticized Laila’s video aimed at her, saying she exuded pure mean girl energy, “nice” but still “mean.”
“She always wanted to hate me out loud and now she’s doing it, proud and with her chest open to promote a YouTube channel,” Claressa added.
Here’s What Laila Already Said About Claressa
Laila Ali apparently dropped her YouTube video after Claressa took a dig at her while appearing on the “Million Dollaz Worth Of Game” podcast, calling her “just Muhammad Ali’s daughter. In her video, Laila said she felt disappointed in Claressa and thinks Claressa has worked very hard to taint her image.
“At the time, I wasn’t aware of her confrontational, vindictive and malicious nature. I know those are strong words, but they fit! She saw me as the face of women’s boxing and she told me she wanted me in. And ever since, she’s been on a mission to ruin my reputation,” Laila said in previous Instagram images.
