Former Mariners and Cubs pitcher Yoervis Medina dead at 37

Medina of Yoervisthe former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs, had died. He was 37 years old.
“Sad news from Venezuela, former AquaSox pitcher Yoervis Medina (2010) has passed away at the age of 37,” the athlete’s former team, Everett AquaSox, announced via X on Friday, October 31. “He pitched in the major leagues between 2013 and 2015. RIP.”
Medina suffered a heart attack while driving in Carabobo, Venezuela, and died in a car accident on October 31, according to Seattle weather. Radio America Venezuela also reported that Medina’s car crashed into several nearby vehicles, adding that Medina was pronounced dead at the scene with no vital signs.
The former baseball player debuted with the Mariners as an amateur free agent in 2005 and spent seven seasons with the team before joining the major leagues in April 2013. He played for the team for three seasons and totaled 140 strikeouts in 137 innings.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Mariners pitcher Yoervis Medina,” the Mariners said in a statement also shared via X on October 31. “We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Medina was traded to the Cubs in May 2015 in exchange for catcher Welington Castle. Medina then appeared in seven games for Chicago before being sent out for assignment (meaning he was removed from the team’s 40-man roster).
Medina also joined a team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played in three games before being released. He played professionally in 2023 for Tecnograniti Senago, as well as in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
News of Medina’s death comes days after former New York Yankees player passed away Jesus Monterodied at age 35.

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero,” the team’s official social media account shared on October 19, confirming the former player’s passing. “We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Montero also played for the Mariners. The team commented on his death shortly after it was announced.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former sailor Jesús Montero. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones,” the official social media account wrote alongside a blue heart emoji.
A GoFundMe for Montero was created on October 6. “He is currently in critical condition, with multiple leg fractures, several broken ribs and serious injuries to his lungs and organs,” the website reads. “Doctors have kept him in an induced coma to aid oxygenation and stabilization, and he is also on dialysis to support his kidneys.”
The message continues: “Jesús is not only a great athlete but also a kind, generous and big-hearted man. Those who know him understand his strength and fighting spirit – but today he needs our help to continue fighting off the field.”
In an update shared on October 16, Montero’s family expressed their “deepest gratitude for all of your support, prayers and messages – they have been the greatest source of strength for Jesús and our family.”
