Kirk was speaking during an event on campus at Utah Valley University on Wednesday September 10 as part of his American return tour. According to a video shared via CNN, Kirk debated a student on armed violence for a few moments before being shot.
“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters in the past 10 years?” A public member asked Kirk.
Kirk replied: “Too much”.
The debateur explained that five transgender people had launched mass fire in the United States over the past decade. The person then asked Kirk if he knew how many total mass shooters there were in the past 10 years.
“Count or not count the violence of the gangs?” Kirk asked.
A few seconds later, Kirk was apparently shot in the neck. According to CNN, the shot was fired at nearly 200 meters.
Later in the day, it was confirmed that Kirk died after being in critical condition. He was 31 years old.
“It is with a heavy heart that we, the Leadership Turning Point USA team, write to inform you that early this afternoon, Charlie went to his eternal reward with Jesus Christ in heaven,” read a declaration of turning point, a politically conservative organization that Kirk founded at the age of 18.
Kirk is survived by his family, who includes his wife, Erika Frantzveand their two young children.
Governor of Utah Spencer Cox Initially, confirmed that a person of interest was in detention at a press conference and qualified the tragic event as “political assassination”.
“We have a person interested in the guard who is interviewed at the moment,” said Cox.
FBI director Kash Patel Later, shared via X that the person was published following an interrogation.
“The subject in detention was released after an interrogation by the police,” wrote Patel. “Our investigation continues and we will continue to publish information in the interest of transparency.”
Kirk was best known as a controversial personality of the conservative media. In addition to his work with Turning Point, Kirk was the host of his podcast “The Charlie Kirk Show”.
