The iconic Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed scenes very far from sporting rivalry Day 1 of the final Ashes testas cricket stopped to honor the victims and heroes of the Bondi terrorist attack on December 14. Before a single ball was thrown, nearly 40,000 fans, elite athletes, first responders and survivors gathered in a deeply moving ceremony that transformed the historic venue into a place of collective memory and unity. What unfolded was a powerful reminder that sport, at its best, can reflect the strength, empathy and resilience of a nation in mourning.
A guard of honor for everyday heroes
In a moment that sparked prolonged applause and tears from the stands, the Australian and English teams joined forces to form a guard of honor in the center of the field. Crossing the line were survivors and civilians whose courage during the attack captured the hearts of the country.
The loudest ovation was reserved for Ahmed Al-Ahmedthe father of two of Syrian origin who played a crucial role in disarming one of the attackers. With his arm still in a sling, Al Ahmed entered the field, hand on his heart, visibly overwhelmed by the standing ovation.
Next to him was a 14 year old Chaya Dadonwho arrived on crutches after being shot in the leg while protecting younger children from gunfire. Her courage has since made her a symbol of hope and selflessness throughout Australia.
As the stadium fell into silence, the giant screens at the SCG displayed the names and faces of the 15 innocent victims who lost their lives in the tragedy, under the message “Forever in our hearts”. Among those recalled were the community leader Edith Brutman, Rabbi Eli Snaker And Yaakov Levitan who were central to Hanukkah celebrations, and Boris and Sofia, the couple who allegedly died together after Boris tried to stop an attacker.

Greeting frontline responders
The ceremony also paid tribute to paramedics, doctors from St Vincent’s Hospital and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and NSW police officers who rushed into danger on that tragic evening. One of the most poignant moments came when the Australian opener retired Usman Khawaja stepped forward to embrace Al Ahmed, a gesture that transcended national colors and competition.
Notably, for the first time at the SCG, specialist police officers carrying long-arm rifles were visible around the venue. New South Wales Police Commissioner Earth Evil stressed that the measures were precautionary and aimed at providing reassurance, helping supporters feel safe returning to public spaces.
Rain interrupts play after England stabilize innings
On the field, the final Ashes Test finally began after the emotional pre-match tribute. England won the toss and elected to bat on day one at the SCG. At Tea, England were well placed at 211/3 in their first innings, with Joe Racine undefeated at 72 and Harry Brook not released on 78 after a calm and authoritative partnership. However, play was delayed shortly after the break due to rain, bringing proceedings to a halt on an already forgettable day in Sydney.
