Captaincy changes, another ICC trophy and Gambhir’s 2nd Test whitewash

The Indian cricket team played 45 matches in 2025: 14 ODIs, 10 Tests and 21 T20Is and finished the year with a record of 30-11.
If the Indian cricket team was to be an adventure in 2025, it would be a roller coaster ride. The year started with a defeat in Sydney. The Test match, which was Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s last, saw Jasprit Bumrah get injured and India failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) for the first time in 10 years.
Another ICC trophy
However, the next 8 months were like a dream. The Indian team did not lose the next 6 series/tournaments. It started with comfortable white-ball series wins against England, capped by the Champions Trophy 2025. It was Team India’s second ICC title in a span of 12 months. This happened after India had not won one in 11 years.
Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli Test retirement and England tour
2 months into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Indian team faced their biggest challenge of the year. Rohit and Kohli retired from Test cricket just a month ago, with Shubman Gill taking the reins from Rohit. The tour couldn’t have been more difficult.
But India fought valiantly and ended up drawing the series. This is despite the fact that Bumrah has only played 3 matches. Gill scored 754 runs, the 2nd for India in the series. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have also scored over 500 runs. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj became the highest wicket-taker, with 23.
Asian Cup trophy and drama
After a month’s break, India beat Pakistan thrice to win the 2025 Asia Cup trophy. India remained undefeated, but controversy ensued. From refusing to shake hands to refusing the trophy by PCB and ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi.
The return of Rohit-Kohli
Returning as single-format players, all eyes were on Rohit and Kohli in Australia. But Gill became the third installment when the BCCI also announced him as India’s ODI captain. India lost the 50-over series, but the veteran showed he still has his place with excellent performances. The T20I series was marred by rain, but India won as Abhishek Sharma continued to destroy the bowlers.
Another whitewash test at home
Everything was fine. And then tragedy struck. After beating the West Indies with relative ease, India won their second home Test series in 12 months. South Africa blanked India, 0-2. First on a controversial ground in Calcutta, then on a suitable ground in Guwahati.
Heads rolled. Gautam Gambhir was under fire as Gill missed both matches due to an unexpected neck injury. India managed to end things with back-to-back white-ball series wins, but all that is remembered at the end of the year is the whitewash of South Africa.
