Florence Pugh
During his appearance on a November 2025 episode of the “Louis Theroux” podcast, Pugh shared his complex thoughts on the use of intimacy coordinators in film.
“They’re the ones who can make sure that intimate scenes go well, that it goes well for everyone and that people are safe. It’s not about getting in the way,” she explained of her work. “It’s not about confusing, it’s not about making things more complicated or more awkward. I’ve had good ones and bad ones.”
Pugh noted that she had done “a lot” of sex scenes before intimacy coordinator was even a real job and that she was always “pretty confident” and “able to make sure she was heard.”
“That being said, even though I know I believe that, and even though I know I felt that way at the time, there are a lot of things that I remember where it was just completely inappropriate to ask me to do that, to order me that way,” she noted.
She also added that her views on coordinating intimacy are “changing” as she’s had “fantastic” experiences and others where someone “made things so weird and so awkward” on set that it “really wasn’t helpful.”
“I think it’s a work that is still being discovered,” she continued. “I will say I’ve been able to understand the meaning better now by working with grown-ups in sex scenes, finding the story of what it is, what kind of sex is it, how do you touch each other, how long have you been having sex?
Everyone is working just to eat up the stage. And I think when I worked with a fantastic coordinator, I was like, “Oh, that’s what I was missing, understanding the dance of intimacy rather than just shooting a sex scene.” There are good ones and bad ones, and it’s from the good ones that I learned how effective it can be.
