BYD’s global sales fall 20% in October

China’s largest automaker BYD reported a 20% year-on-year fall in global vehicle sales to 429,808 units in October from 536,134 units a year earlier, marking a sharp deterioration in the company’s market performance.

Growth in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales slowed sharply last month, increasing just over 6% to 219,382 units, while plug-in hybrid vehicle sales plunged more than 37% to 204,792 units. The company sold an additional 5,634 commercial vehicles during the month, an increase of 164% year-over-year.

Global sales of BYD vehicles further increased by more than 10% to 3,643,377 units in the first ten months of the year, mainly reflecting a strong performance in the first half. This includes a 30% increase in battery electric vehicle sales to 1,797,558 units, while plug-in hybrid vehicle sales fell almost 6% to 1,798,082 units. The company has also sold 47,737 utility vehicles worldwide since the start of the year, a nearly four-fold increase year-on-year.

BYD reported a 33% year-on-year drop in net profit to CNY7.8 billion ($1.1 billion) in the third quarter of 2025, the second consecutive quarterly decline, reflecting strong price competition in its domestic market and abroad.

Revenue fell 3% to CNY195 billion in the third quarter, while global vehicle sales fell 1.8% to 1,114,192 units – marking the first year-on-year decline in more than four years. In the first nine months of the year, revenue rose 12.7% to CNY566 billion, while net profit fell 7.5% to CNY23.3 billion.
