Cameron Norrie prevailed in a wild marathon of five sets against Nicolas Jarry of Chile on Sunday to ensure a performance at home in England in the quarter -finals of Wimbledon in London, where he will face the double champion in title Carlos Alcaraz.

Norrie overcome two narrow defeats with the opportunity to win and drop Jarry 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-3 in four hours and 27 minutes, giving it its second appearance at the end of the finals at Wimbledon (2022).

The 29 -year -old is the fourth British player to make several quarter -finals from Wimbledon, joining Tim Henman, Andy Murray and Roger Taylor.

“At the start of this year, I had trouble with confidence,” said Norrie. “I want to enjoy my tennis more and I do this. It’s a bonus to win, but enjoy it, that’s what matters. I’m so happy to be in another quarter -final of the best world tournament.”

By managing his best finish during a major, Jarry had an astonishing advantage in winners 103-36 and was even more dominant with 46 AS compared to Norrie’s Eight.

Jarry avoided elimination in the two sets 3 and 4, recovering from 5-6 in the first and corresponding to Norrie Point for the point in the second before prevailing in an equality break.

“Honestly, I don’t know how I did that,” said Norrie. “Credit to Nico (Jarry). He did an incredible job. He played better than me in both breakage. I had to continue fighting.”

Supported by a partisan crowd at home, Norrie came out strong in the fifth set, sprinting an advance of 3-0, then pushing it to 4-1 and 5-2 before finally closing things.

“He stayed there but I kept taking care of my service,” added Norrie. “The atmosphere was so good and I appreciate that the crowd makes me pass.”

His opponent in the districts will be the second classified Alcaraz of Spain, which rocked an opening defeat to take three lines and close the world number 14 Andrey Rublev 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

The Russian proved to be opportunistic to grasp the slow start of Alcaraz, supporting his 4-1 advantage in a first set victory.

But Alcaraz settled in its familiar championship form, winning 41 winners and 22 AS to maintain unbalanced Rublev.

“Andrey is one of the most powerful players, if not the most powerful we have on tour,” said Alcaraz. “Without a doubt, with its aggressiveness for the ball, with this forehand, with these photos, it’s really difficult. To face it, you feel like you are growing on the limit with each ball, (doing you) running from one side to the other.

“It makes it really difficult to face him, but I’m really really happy with the way I moved today. I think I played intelligently and intelligently today against him. Tactically, it was a very good match, which I am really proud of.”

ATP n ° 20 Karen Khachanov, from Russia, managed the Kamil Majchrzak of Poland 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour, 48 minutes. Despite 21 uns forked mistakes, Khachanov dominated the game with 44 winners and 20 seconds back.

His opponent in the districts should be well rested, because ATP No. 5 Taylor Fritz qualified for his third appearance of Wimbledon with a 1-0 victory when Australia Jordan Thompson was forced to retire due to an injury. Fritz led 6-1, 3-0 at the time.

“This is not the way I want to pass,” said Fritz. “I was really excited to play Jordan today. I was excited to play good tennis and it’s just sad. He fought. He played five setters. He played a long double match yesterday, so he fought here and hope for him to go out.
