BCCI confirms Shreyas Iyer suffered laceration to spleen

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday said middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer was treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), citing a laceration to his spleen.
According to the BCCI statement released on Thursday, Iyer suffered an impact injury to the left lower region of the rib cage while playing during the October 25 match. He was immediately taken to a Sydney hospital for further assessment.
“Shreyas Iyer suffered an impact injury to the left lower region of the rib cage while playing during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in its statement.
“Scans revealed a laceration to his spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring the status of his injury. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his day-to-day progress,” he added.
The incident occurred when Iyer took a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off the bowling of Harshit Rana, sprinting from backward point.
However, he landed awkwardly, injuring his rib cage. Iyer was in visible pain, holding his side before being assisted off the field by medical staff.
Before the injury, Iyer had scored 11 and 61 in the first two ODIs, both of which India lost.
The visitors, however, bounced back strongly to clinch a nine-wicket victory in the final ODI, thanks to a masterclass from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, although Australia won the series 2-1.
Iyer has not been included in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against Australia, which is scheduled to begin on October 29, and his availability for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa – starting November 30 – remains uncertain depending on his recovery progress.
