Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez was set to leave the club during this year’s summer transfer window.
The Argentine goalkeeper was linked with a move to Manchester United, but the Red Devils ultimately signed Senne Lammens and Martinez ended up staying at Villa Park.
However, his form this season has been questionable and his long-term future at the club has come under scrutiny.
Villa are in the market for a new goalkeeper and have identified a Premier League player who is struggling to get game time at his club.
Aston Villa want Man City star James Trafford
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are interested in a move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
Following his move from Burnley to the Etihad Stadium in the summer, Trafford were expected to challenge Ederson for a place in the starting line-up.
Ederson left the club in the summer and Gianluigi Donnarumma was signed by Paris Saint-Germain, who instantly became the number one goalkeeper.
This pushed Trafford down the pecking order and as a result his playing time was affected.
Aston Villa are now looking to use this opportunity to make a move towards Trafford and they believe he could be Martinez’s long-term replacement at Villa Park.
Man City open to Trafford loan move
Man City are ready to let Trafford leave the club in the near future to continue their development, but only on a loan deal. They still have confidence in the English goalkeeper and believe that he could be useful to them in the long term.
There is no doubt about Trafford’s quality and he has proven himself for Burnley in the Championship, but the goalkeeper is now looking for more opportunities in the Premier League and Aston Villa are ready to offer them.
A player of his talent should play week after week instead of warming up the bench.
Alongside Villa, Newcastle United are also interested in the former Burnley goalkeeper.
