Arsenal criticized for misusing Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres scored a well-deserved goal in last night’s 3-2 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

It allowed the Sweden international to end his recent goal drought, which dated back to the 1-0 win over Everton last month.

It has been a difficult season for Gyokeres in general, as he has only scored eight goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal.

This is a drop from the incredible numbers Gyokeres produced at his former club Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 97 goals in just 102 games over two seasons.

Gyokeres eventually scored against Chelsea, but initially reacted angrily when Bukayo Saka failed to cross for him despite being in a good position.

Watch below as the pundits discuss Gyokeres’ goal at Stamford Bridge and highlight how he looked very annoyed at first when Saka decided not to join him…

Gyokeres was in a good position and surely could have scored from a quicker pass from Saka, although he instead opted to wait and play through Ben White, whose cross was eventually stabbed home.

The 27-year-old even appeared to snub Saka during the goal celebrations, pushing the England international aside to point to White instead as a thank you for the help his other teammate wouldn’t give him…

“Rightly so, he’s upset the ball isn’t coming,” pundit Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink said on Sky Sports afterwards. “I would go completely ballistic.”

Are Arsenal playing to Viktor Gyokeres’ strengths?

This season it has at times felt like Gyokeres is really struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League, but are Arsenal also to blame?

See below Jamie Redknapp also analyzed Gyokeres’ game and how he may be struggling due to the different type of service he receives at the Emirates Stadium…

Sporting often played with full-backs, meaning much of their attacking threat came from crosses and more direct play than Arsenal tend to employ.

It will be interesting to see if the Gunners can solve this problem or if Mikel Arteta ends up using Kai Havertz or Gabriel Jesus as his first choice centre-forward at some point this season.
