Hazbin Hotel Creator Teases Lilith’s Top Secret Voice in Season 3 [Exclusive]

Adult animation has been a huge part of pop culture for decades, and thanks to hits like “Hazbin Hotel,” that wave isn’t going to crash any time soon. “Hazbin Hotel” sets itself apart from the usual kind of show audiences think of when they hear “adult animation,” with hyperstylized characters, jaw-dropping musical numbers and a frank approach to tackling taboo subjects like sex, drugs and the afterlife. Created by freelance animator/writer Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano, “Hazbin Hotel” centers on Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), the daughter of Lilith and Lucifer, who opens a rehabilitation center to offer misfit demons a chance at redemption in an effort to find a non-violent alternative to reduce the overpopulation in Hell. It’s a show about sinners fighting for a chance in heaven, and that means big personalities, lots of high-stakes drama, and resonant themes that keep audiences coming back for more.

Fans were rabid from the start, in part because the target audience tends to fall in the middle of a Venn diagram between chronically online kids and theater kids (don’t move, I’m one of you!). It was the theatrical connection that helped amplify the show to viewers who otherwise might not have given it a try, thanks to a vocal cast of musical theater favorites. In addition to Henningsen, the series boasts the vocal prowess of people like Stephanie Beatriz, Alex Brightman, Kimiko Glenn, Blake Ronan, Jessica Vosk, Jeremy Jordan, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Brandon Rogers, Christian Borle, Keith David and Darren Criss…and that’s only scratching the surface.

But at the end of season 2, one character has yet to receive a voice: Lilith. During an interview I conducted with Medrano, I asked her about the role and she gave me a little hint on where fans should look to find her.

Lilith’s voice comes from the world of theater

In addition to Broadway favorites, “Hazbin Hotel” also included singers better known for pop and rock music, like Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, who joined Season 2 as Abel. That is to say, Lilith doesn’t necessarily have to be a Broadway superstar, because Medrano clearly has his pick of talents. “I don’t want to name anyone in particular because I also don’t want to give anyone hope that we have a certain person, but she’s a very ethereal queen,” Medrano tells me. “I mean, she’s a queen, literally, but like a diva queen, and she’s kind of dark and her themes are resistance and power and empowerment, and I feel like we have some incredible artists in real life who kind of embody that energy that kind of inspired her.”

Medrano wouldn’t tell me outright who plays Lilith, but she did say, “The person who plays her has a phenomenal voice and comes from the theater world – which is where most of our actors come from – but there are so many phenomenal singers in that world, obviously.” I dug around a little more and she described the person’s voice as “particularly commanding,” which certainly piqued my interest. “I think it’s probably exactly what people imagine in terms of the vibe, the personification, the energy and the diva queen, so I’m really looking forward to people meeting her,” she concludes. “We have some really cool voices coming in Season 3. Obviously we’ll hear it eventually, but some of the other characters, like the guest stars we had in Season 3 in particular, are just as great.”

Season 3 of “Hazbin Hotel” is currently in production.
