Amazon Web Services issue causes global websites and apps to crash | Internet News

Internet users have reported difficulty accessing popular websites and apps, including Signal, Coinbase and Robinhood.

Major websites, including popular gaming, finance and social media platforms, faced severe connectivity issues after Amazon’s cloud services unit AWS went down.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed the issue in an update on its status page on Monday, after internet users reported difficulty accessing websites.

“We can confirm significant error rates for requests to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 region,” the AWS status update states.

In a later update, it said it had “identified a potential root cause for [the] error rate” and “worked on several parallel paths to speed recovery”.

Major platforms including AI startup Perplexity, trading app Robinhood, messaging app Signal and crypto exchange Coinbase all said their issues were due to the AWS outage.

“Perplexity is currently down. The root cause is an AWS issue. We are working to resolve it,” Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, said in an article on X.

AWS is one of the giant providers of cloud computing services, competing with Google and Microsoft cloud services to offer on-demand computing power, data storage and other digital services to businesses and institutions.

Problems with its servers can wreak havoc on the web, with many businesses relying on its infrastructure to operate.

Downdetector, a site where Internet users report outages, conducted a roll call of popular sites where users experienced difficulty accessing due to the outage.

Names on the list included Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, Canva, Wordle and more.

Amazon’s shopping site, PrimeVideo and Alexa, were also facing issues, according to the site.

News agency Reuters reported that Uber rival Lyft’s app was also down for thousands of users in the United States, while many British bank customers were also reporting outages.
