Alex Rodriguez’s ex-wife ‘felt sorry’ for him, says development was ‘delayed’

Alex Rodriguezthe ex-wife of Cynthia RodriguezNicolas (née Scurtis), explained how his extensive baseball career prevented him from making the necessary progress in his personal life.

“I felt sorry for him. That’s true,” Nicolas said in the first episode of the HBO series. Alex vs ARodwhich premiered on Thursday, November 6. “He was a nice guy. He had a very big heart. But he was so retarded as far as a person’s natural development goes. He was so steeped in baseball. He was told that’s what he was going to do for so long, and that’s all he did.”

Rodriguez, 50, and Nicolas, 52, were married from 2002 to 2008 and share daughters Natasha20, and Ella17.

“Alex is a creature of habit and baseball was all he did,” Nicolas said. “If he wasn’t hitting, he was throwing. If he wasn’t throwing, he was running. If he wasn’t running, he was watching videos of different pitchers, studying. He was all in.”

Alex Rodriguez’s most important accomplishment in life was never his record-breaking career in professional baseball, but rather raising his two daughters, Natasha and Ella. The New York Yankees legend welcomed his daughters during his six-year marriage to their mother, Cynthia Scurtis Rodriguez. Even though the former couple split in July 2008, they remained united […]

She added: “There was a lot of his life that he missed and a lot of the stages that we go through as children into adulthood that shape us and shape us, and he didn’t have those experiences.”

Nicolas argued that the weight on Rodriguez’s shoulders was also a result of the pressure he faced to provide for his parents and half-siblings. “I could see where his family gave him the position of head of the household from a young age.”

In the docuseries, Nicolas recalls his first meeting with Rodriguez and his complete ignorance of his status as a generational athlete.

“I had no idea who he was,” she said. “I didn’t follow baseball. I wasn’t interested in baseball. I had no idea.”

Nicolas added: “He was approaching me at the gym. He was really interested in my university life, I guess because he didn’t have one.”

After their marriage, Nicolas said Rodriguez managed to compartmentalize his professional and personal life.

“I didn’t really know A-Rod. I know Alex,” Nicolas explained. “A-Rod was like a fictional thing created by people. He was a character, he was a personality. To me, he was just Alex.”
