Openai hoped to shrink the menu of generative AI models on its Chatgpt platform in one with the release of its GPT-5 model this week. Not everyone was a fan.
Now, CEO Sam Altman says that the developer plans to give Chatgpt subscribers plus the possibility of continuing to use the old 4O model.
Altman and other Openai leaders asked questions about Reddit on Friday, one day after the announcement of the new GPT-5 model. A quick glance through the comments has revealed how many users have preferred how older models like GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5 and 4O managed writing and other tasks. Some have said that other models seemed more friendly and conversational than GPT-5.
“Bring back 4o,” said a user, “GPT-5 carries my dead friend’s skin.”
Another said that the GPT-5 is “short” and “cold” compared to the GPT-4, adding: “It was terrible that it happened during the night without other options.”
Altman, publishing in AMA, said Openai who will plan to make 4O models or other models for users more. Altman said “We all hear you on 4o” and that Optai will monitor the use to see how long to support 4O for users more.
The deployment of GPT-5 was “a little more joyful than we hoped,” said Altman. The program that decides whether an prompt will be managed by a faster and lighter model within the GPT-5 or a more intensive reasoning model did not work for a part of Thursday, he said. The deployment of GPT-5 to all users has also taken more time than expected.
