Adam Sandler says his daughters ‘judge’ his jokes now: it used to be ‘easier’

There is nothing Adam Sandler loves more than making her daughters, Sadie and Sunny, laugh, but that’s proving to be more of a challenge these days.

“They laughed more easily,” Sandler, 59, admitted. David Letterman during a special episode of his series My next guest needs no introduction. “Now they’re older and they judge you a little bit. I hear, ‘Oh, don’t say that.'”

Still, making his two teenagers smile remains the “greatest thing” Sandler could hope for. “You’re happiest when they’re happy,” he said.

Sandler also discussed fatherhood during the conversation and being a father to Sadie, 19, and Sunny, 17, as they follow in his footsteps as actors. Sandler confirmed that Sadie had a role in Jay Kellywhich was filmed in Italy and London last year. The actor recalled the particular way in which his partner George Clooney made sure he and his family felt comfortable abroad.

“In Europe, Clooney knows everything. He’s such a generous guy. He took care of my family,” Sandler, 78, told Letterman. “Her birthday is the same as my daughter Sadie’s, so that day everyone wanted to talk about George and George was like the whole day was about Sadie.”

Sadie and Sunny have appeared in numerous Sandler projects over the years, with Sunny playing a starring role in this year’s. Merry Gilmore 2 (Sadie and Jackie also made appearances). They also starred alongside their father in the 2023 Netflix film. So you’re not invited to my Bar Mitzvah and played a role in Hotel Transylvania, Pixels, Jack and Jill and the Adults franchise.

“My friends all had kids at the same time, so they all grew up on the sets together,” Sandler said of his reputation for bringing his family to all of his projects. “And now the kids know a lot about making movies and all that. It’s great. … They’ve been in a group, they’ve done two different movies this summer.”

Jackie, whom Sandler married in 2003, has also appeared in several of his films over the years, appearing Big Daddy, 50 First Dates, Adults and more. While speaking to Letterman, Sandler recalled first meeting Jackie at a friends’ party in the ’90s and being immediately attracted to her.

“I was sitting down and we were all introduced, my friends and Jackie’s friends, and somehow we sat next to each other and, like you do when you fall in love immediately, we looked at each other,” Sandler explained. “We couldn’t stop looking at each other.”

Sandler said the two were “nice to each other” when Jackie revealed she was leaving for Florida the next day to visit her grandmother, which made the actor fall “even more in love with her.”

“So we kept flirting on the phone and then she came back and we immediately took the plunge, maybe 28 years ago,” he said as the camera panned to Jackie in the audience, smiling.

Sandler has never been shy about expressing his love for his family, but he has admitted to taking creative liberties during his You’re My Best Friend comedy tour, often making up things that aren’t “true” about his wife and children to make audiences laugh at his “zany” stories. “I think that during [the set] while I say [this stuff, Jackie] I have to go, ‘Let’s move on,'” Sandler told Letterman with a laugh.

To redeem himself, Sandler ends his sets by serenading his wife and children with a song from his 1998 film. The wedding singermodifying the lyrics to be a dedication to his love for them.

“Now we don’t know a big house, we don’t need no money, all we need is you, me, Sadie and Sunny,” a clip of Sandler’s performance showed him singing on stage at the end of the episode. “I have everything I need to grow old with you.”
