Filmmaker Mira Nair is reportedly moving ahead with her much-awaited biopic on famed painter Amrita Sher-Gil, tentatively titled Amri. While an official announcement has yet to be made, reports suggest that Tanya Maniktala, best known for her performance in Nair’s 2020 BBC series A Adapted Boy, has been cast as the Hungarian-Indian artist.

Earlier speculations had linked Ananya Panday to the lead role, but a latest report from Mid-Day now states that Nair has chosen to reunite with Maniktala for this ambitious project. The film, considered a period drama set in India, Hungary and France, aims to present the life and art of Sher-Gil, considered one of the most important modernist painters of the early 20th century, whose work bridges the gap between European and Indian aesthetics.
According to the report, the story will explore Amrita’s artistic journey as well as her relationships with key figures in her life, including her father Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia, her husband Viktor Egan, her fiancé Yusuf Ali Khan and her close friend Jawaharlal Nehru. In 2023, actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh have reportedly been approached for crucial roles.
Nair, who has been developing the project for almost four years, is reportedly looking to start production by the end of the year if everything goes according to plan. The filmmaker’s vision would extend beyond a conventional biopic; she intends to highlight Sher-Gil’s influence in shaping the narrative of modern Indian art while introducing his legacy to a wider international audience.
While official confirmation of the film’s casting and production schedule is awaited, the renewed buzz around Amri signals that Nair’s much-awaited tribute to one of India’s pioneering artists could soon be a step closer to reality.
