The Philippines are in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. The country had two major earthquakes in January, without reported victims.

In 2023, an offshore earthquake of 6.7 magnitude killed eight people.

San Remigio vice-mayor, Alfie Reynes said that among people killed were people who played basketball in a sports complex when she collapsed.

She called for food and water for evacuated, as well as heavy equipment to help research and rescuers.

“It is strongly raining and there is no electricity, so we really need help, especially in the northern part because there is a rarity of water after the supply lines were damaged by the earthquake,” said Reynes.

The local media published videos of people who rushed out of their house while the floor trembled and the buildings collapsed, including a church that was over 100 years old.
