A Minecraft movie will have a Minecraft sequel

If Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s the blockbuster that makes banks successful. will get a suite (or seven). Enter A Minecraft moviewith its surprisingly effective humor and box office payout of $957 million. (Who had “Jack Black to anchor a nearly billion-dollar movie” on their 2025 bingo card?) So it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has officially given the green light to a sequel.
Variety reports that Warner Bros. has scheduled the sequel for a premiere date of July 23, 2027. That would place it roughly two years after the original, which is the second highest-grossing film of the year so far. (Disney Lilo and Stitch is in first position, with $1.03 billion at the box office.)
The sequel would bring back director Jared Hess. THE Napoleon Dynamite The creator will also co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Producers reportedly include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson and Jason Momoa.
Engadget was among many publications baffled by the quality A Minecraft movie was. After all, a film about an open-ended construction game, starring one of the crummy game’s protagonists. Borderlandsdidn’t seem promising. But we found it surprisingly funny, with just the right amount of self-awareness.
