There are few action (or science fiction) films that can compete with the original “Predator” with regard to the value of sustainable entertainment. Directed by John McTiernan (renowned “Die Hard”), it is not only a classic from Stone Cold and one of the best films by Arnold Schwarzenegger, he has launched an entire frankness that is still going to date. None of this would have been possible if the filmmakers had not nailed the creature in the center of all this. What you may not know is that an “transformers” icon has helped make the predator as we know him.
“Predator” focuses on a military specialist named Dutch (Schwarzenegger) whose team is called to eliminate a mysterious threat in the jungle. They quickly discover something worse than they could have imagined; An extraterrestrial with humans of advanced technology for sport. Let them start.
The design of stellar creatures was obviously crucial for making the predator, but there was also the now emblematic click sound made by the extraterrestrial beast. This is where Peter Cullen comes into play. Better known as the voice of Optimus takes precedence over the “transformers” franchise, he is also the man responsible for making the predator sounds as he does. In an interview in 2023 with Collider, the actor recalled how everything went.
“Years ago on Massachusetts beach, at low tide, there was a crab upside down, and it was a hot day, and the bubbles came out, and his legs are like that [gestures]And all these bubbles break, and they do this little [mimics Predator click]. So, I thought: “it’s stuck in my brain”. When they asked me to do the predator: “What do you see?” And this gray sequence crossed the screen, and they said, “Can you find something?” “”
Peter Cullen made the film Magic in a short time on Predator
Cullen has already had a decade of vocal work to his credit at this stage, but with the animated series “Transformers” and “Transformers: The Movie” of 1986, he had become a rising star in this world. After tinkering the microphone, Cullen managed to make the magic occur in a short time.
“They finally do it about it here where I need it, and I just said, [makes Predator click sounds] – I did it better at the time – while this sequence crossed the screen, and [the director] I’m so bored. He said: “Okay, that’s enough!” He got up, and the voice came from behind and said, “You’d better come here and listen to that. [Laughs] He went up and he was so grumpy to mount these stairs, and I think that around five minutes later, he comes [gestures happy skipping]He’s going like that. He had just found his sequence of happiness, and that was there.
“We made the whole film that day. I did it all, each coil, and they have been using it since … for free. [Laughs]”Cullen joked.
Indeed, the Predator still uses this sound clip to date. Everything works a little better if you can really hear Cullen tell the story, which you can do in the video below. Anyway, the actor managed to help cut this little piece of cinema history, all inspired by a horseshoe crab.
The franchise “Predator” is currently in the middle of a rebirth thanks to “Prey” of 2022. This year has seen the release of the animation “Predator: Killer of Killers”, which has put a very intriguing future for the series. Meanwhile, the director Dan Trachtenberg also has a new live film in the box in the form of “Predator: Badlands”, which builds a bridge towards the “Alien” franchise for an epic crossover. We will surely hear much more clicks from Cullen in the years to come.
