“The Terminator” of 1984 is one of the most loved science fiction films of all time. Directed by James Cameron, it was its characteristic in small groups and led to its long career in the field of one of the most prosperous directors of Hollywood. This has also contributed to the career of many actors on the screen, notably Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played the holder Terminator, and Linda Hamilton, who led the cast of Sarah Connor. It turns out, however, that another actor who continued to play in another science fiction film in time of the 80s almost obtained the front part Hamilton.
In a 2015 interview on the podcast “Nerdist”, Lea Thompson, of the renowned “Back to the Future”, revealed that she had already been in the mix to represent Sarah Connor in “The Terminator”. “They were really interested in me for the first” Terminator “,” said Thompson. So what’s wrong? An accident involving a borrowed car which caused material damage derailed everything. As Thompson recalled:
“I didn’t have a car. I borrowed that of my boyfriend, the rhythm of the cousin and something was wrong with the transmission, so the liquid escaped and you had to continue to add transmission liquid to this stimulator. [Gale Ann Hurd and James Cameron] were still together. So, I slipped on their hill and I released two new trees and a few lights while I slipped. “”
At the time, Cameron came out with Gale Ann Hurd, a legendary producer in its own right, the two marrying for a while in 1985. “It was not really hard to cook, because I was in a stimulator. So, I did not have the role,” added Thompson. “I did the hearing, but I was really upset to cause at least $ 5,000 in damage.”

“My career would have been different if I had obtained this one,” joked Thompson, even if she did not seem so sad about it and was clearly fun recalling history.
It is certainly true that the career trajectory of anyone who would have changed by being part of “The Terminator”, which was a low -budget affair which continued to become an unexpected success. Simply imagine Thompson instead that Hamilton can kick his ass in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”, one of the biggest suites of all time. At the time, she came out of her turns in films like “Jaws 3-D” and “Red Dawn” and was apparently a role far from the realization of the status of rupture. It could have been this role of escape.
However, everything worked very well for Thompson at the end. She ended up winning the role of Lorraine in “Back to the Future”, most likely the biggest time travel film ever made. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, it was a massive and revolutionary success when it was released in 1985, paving the way for an entire trilogy. This is the kind of role on which one can easily build an entire career, which Thompson certainly did, cementing his place in the history of cinema in the process.
It is interesting to consider that it could have, in a different chronology, had made her career on the back of another science fiction film on time travel, although a very different variety. A key difference is that “Back to the Future” ended with a trilogy, and it is not planned to make “Back to the Future 4” or a restart (as long as Zemeckis lives and breathes, anyway). Meanwhile, the “Terminator” franchise is now made up of six films and two television programs, with more potentially along the way. In both cases, these properties go up their respective roots to what is largely considered to be among the greatest science fiction films ever made.
