Suriname elects the first woman president of the country in the midst of the economic crisis


The legislators elected Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as the first president of Suriname on Sunday after the legislative victory of her party. The former 71-year-old opposition chief became the only candidate after the rivals refused to appoint anyone to lead the South American little nation.
