Waymo draws autonomous vehicles from downtown after the rioters set fire to cars

Waymo, a subsidiary of the mother company of Google Alphabet, temporarily removes its autonomous cars from downtown Los Angeles after rioters set fire to some of the vehicles in response to federal immigration raids.

Waymo said that he had quickly withdrawn his autonomous vehicles from downtown Los Angeles and “will not serve this area for the moment that did not come out of prudence”. The company said it was still planning to operate in other parts of Los Angeles.

A spokesperson told Fox Business that the company was “in contact with the police”.

The company said that a number of its vehicles were close to the place where the riots took place in the city center of the city while immigration and customs application (ICE) carry out raids across the city.

Around 9:15 p.m. Local time on Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Service (LAPD) confirmed on X that “several autonomous vehicles” had been burnt down.

A wave of violent riots broke out during the weekend in response to a series of ice raids, with demonstrators urging the Trump administration to end deportations.

President Donald Trump simultaneously deployed thousands of national guard troops in the city, which local leaders argued that tensions in the region only increased in the region.

Governor Gavin Newsom posted on X that he asked the administration to “cancel their illegal deployment of troops in the County of Los Angeles and to return them to my command”.

The mayor of Karen Bass said that she was “saddened” to see the vandalism that stems from riots in certain parts of the city.

“I will tell you that I am saddened by the extent of vandalism in the form of graffiti throughout the city center,” she told CNN on Monday.

Aside from autonomous vehicles, the LAPD published on X that companies and residents in downtown Los Angeles reported incidents of vandalism and looting during the night on Sunday after The rioters failed to disperse.

“The agitators broke out in and through (sic) the city center”, the The Central Divisio of LAPDN wrote on X Sunday. “Residents, companies and visitors to the city center must be alert and report any criminal activity. The agents respond in several different places to disperse the crowds.”
