Gervonta Davis reveals injury delaying ring return as he aims for rematch

It’s been a year to forget for Gervonta Davis, but the 31-year-old is already preparing for his return to the ring.
“Tank” Davis remains one of boxing’s biggest attractions, a fighter who draws huge crowds with his explosive talent and often controversial life outside the ropes.
In 2025, Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs), fought just once – a highly controversial draw with Lamont Roach – while simultaneously dealing with a series of personal problems. His planned crossover fight against cruiserweight Jake Paul was also scrapped following recent abuse allegations made by Davis’ ex-girlfriend.
Roach and another former Davis opponent, Isaac Cruz, met last Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas, with both men pursuing a shot at the world title at welterweight. Cruz’s WBC interim belt was on the line, but the main event ended in another draw for Roach – the third of his career.
Although Roach isn’t interested in a Davis rematch at the moment, his weekend opponent could be headed in that direction. The Baltimore native signaled his intentions in a now-deleted post on X, writing:
“I’m taking him [Isaac Cruz] then, as soon as my knee is better.
What exactly is wrong with his knee remains unclear, but a Davis-Cruz rematch would hark back to their December 2021 encounter, which Davis won by unanimous decision after 12 extremely competitive rounds. It could also prove a more lucrative option for Cruz than a second fight with Roach, which has been floated for next year.
