The eminent filmmaker and director of photography Malayalam Shaji N Karun died on Monday April 28, 2025 at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 73 years old and has been fighting cancer for some time.

Born January 1, 1952 in Kollam, Kerala, Shaji N Karun became a pioneering figure in Indian cinema, known for his deep visual narration and his commitment to cinematographic realism. After graduating from the India Institute of Cinema and Television in 1974, he began his career as director of photography, collaborating in depth with the famous director G. Aravindan. His exceptional work behind the camera earned him the national prize for the best cinematography for the film Thahampu in 1979.
The beginnings of the realization of Karun, Piravi (1988) collected an international renown, winning the special mention of Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film and multiple national prices. His following films, Swear (1994) and Vanaprasham (1999), were also projected in Cannes, with Swear In competition for the Palme d’Or. His 2009 film Kutty SRANK won the National Award for the best feature film.
Beyond cinema, Karun played a central role in the training of Kerala’s film institutions. He was inaugural president of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and then chaired the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. His contributions to the cinema were recognized with several honors, including the Padma Shri in 2011 and the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
Karun is survived by his wife, Anasuya Devaki Warrier, and the sons, Press and Anil. His funeral will take place with official honors in Santhikavadom, Thycaud, Tuesday April 29.
The death of Shaji N Karun marks the end of an era in Malayalam cinema, leaving behind a heritage which continues to inspire filmmakers and the public.
