Final decision made on 25-year-old’s future

Over the summer, Man United managed to remove a number of fringe players, if only temporarily. One of them was Jadon Sancho, who joined Premier League side Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

Sancho returned to Man United at the end of last season after Chelsea opted to pay a penalty clause, meaning they did not secure his services permanently. For this reason, Man United risk losing the 25-year-old for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

According to Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider), Man United’s plan is for Sancho to leave upon his return from Aston Villa, as the chances of them triggering an automatic one-year contract extension are becoming increasingly unlikely.

“I think they increased the possibility of just cutting their losses on Sancho, letting him leave on a free transfer rather than activating that clause and sort of protecting their asset by giving him another year.

“His time at Old Trafford definitely looks over. He’s not going to regain his place in Ruben Amorim’s plans for the future. Again, it hasn’t been the ideal start for him at Aston Villa either. He hasn’t started a Premier League game under Unai Emery and has failed to impress Emery.

“So it’s a big few months ahead for Jadon Sancho. If he doesn’t play regularly he may not have as many options as he probably thought in the summer. If he becomes a free agent United probably won’t want to take on his wages, he earns a lot of money and is in excess of £200,000 a week.”

Sancho could end his loan spell at Aston Villa in January, given he has struggled to make his presence known at Villa Park. If this happens, a return to Germany could be considered.
